Importance of Omega-3 Fish Oil

The importance of omega-3 provided by fish oil is still unknown to many people. Fortunately, in recent years there has been much said and published regarding the many great health benefits of getting sufficient quantities of fish oil within one's diet.

Many people have become increasingly aware and are making an effort to take advantage of the foods and supplements available. Omega-3 fatty oils are great for the heart and cardiovascular health, and some studies are indicating that they are good for circulation and brain health also.

Omega-3 fatty acids are omega-3 fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

These fatty acids are only available from either food products or supplements, as the body does not produce these naturally.

The best way of getting them is from cold water fish. Various fish of different varieties have these oils.

Some fish with the highest amounts are Salmon, Tuna fish, Mackerel, and trout.

Much other fish also have these oils. The FDA in the United States recommends eating up to 12 ounces of fresh fish each week.

The problem is that many people do not eat fish regularly and therefore do not get the benefits of omega-3.

As a matter of fact, in many western nations deficiency in omega-3 is quite common.

This deficiency causes many ill effects and can be entirely prevented if proper amounts of fish are consumed.

Now keep in mind that much of the fresh fish available for consumption actually contains contaminants, primarily mercury, that can cause health problems if enough is consumed over time.

The FDA publishes information on each fish type and estimated amounts of mercury within them.

So combined with mercury contamination and diets with not enough fish or even no fish, it may make sense to get omega-3 from fish oil supplements.

It's a choice many people find appealing... It's certainly worth considering. It's also not a bad idea to get omega-3 from both fish and supplements, as supplements are not an alternative for a good healthy diet.

Fish oil supplements are created by extracting oil from fish and encapsulating them in gel tablets, or providing the oil in a bottle.

Fish oils are available at all ends of the quality and price spectrum, and often, but not always, the best oils are higher priced.

A processing method for extracting oils known as molecular distillation is often used in the higher priced oils and may be worth the price if mercury contamination is of great concern.

The method is quite efficient at reducing or eliminating contaminates making the extracted oil high quality and safe to consume on a regular basis.

The amount of EPA and DHA within the supplements varies as well.

Typically there are lower to medium dosage supplements that are probably the best option for someone in good health that just wants to ensure that their Omega-3 intake is up to par.

Then there are supplements of a higher dosage that may be better for people with specific conditions that fish oil can help.

Most of the time the higher dosages are best taken after consulting a doctor to see if they are right for you.
